Hu Baifan was born in October 1962. After graduating from Shaoxing University with a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree, he pursued a Master of Business Administration from Zhejiang University. Before entering the business world, Hu taught chemistry for six years at a vocational school.

In 1988, Hu Baifan started a small factory to produce industrial ethanol with funds borrowed from his colleagues. This factory later expanded into the production of ingredients for vitamins. Under his leadership, Zhejiang NHU grew to become one of the world's largest vitamin producers and a major player in the fine chemicals industry.
