Herb Chambers was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1941. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood and started working at a local supermarket at age 13. He dropped out of high school in his senior year and later served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation electrician.
Rise to Success
After his military service, Chambers worked as a copy machine repairman. Seeing an opportunity, he started his own copier distribution company, A-Copy America, which he later sold for $80 million in 1983. His entry into the automotive industry began in 1985 when he purchased a Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealership. Chambers focused on exceptional customer service, which helped him expand his business through acquisitions.
