Herbert G. Chambers was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1941. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood and began working at a local supermarket at a young age. After dropping out of high school in his senior year, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as an aviation electrician. Chambers' early experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed.
Rise to Success
After his military service, Chambers entered the business world as a copy machine repairman. Recognizing the potential in the burgeoning office equipment market, he founded A-Copy America, a copier distribution company. A-Copy America quickly grew into the largest office copier dealer in the world. In 1983, Chambers sold the company for $80 million, marking his first major financial achievement.
Chambers entered the automotive industry in 1985, purchasing an Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealership in New London, Connecticut. He transformed the dealership by focusing on customer service and adopting a no-haggle pricing strategy. This approach proved successful, and Chambers rapidly expanded his automotive empire, acquiring dealerships for various brands across New England. Today, The Herb Chambers Companies includes 60 dealerships, representing a wide array of automotive brands.
