Early Life
Harry Stine was born in 1941 or 1942 and raised in Dallas County, Iowa, on a family farm. He developed an early fascination with agriculture, starting to drive a tractor at the age of five. He graduated from Central Dallas High School and then McPherson College in Kansas.
Rise to Success
In 1964, Stine joined his father's soybean cleaning business in Adel, Iowa. His interest in seed breeding was sparked by the discovery of unique soybean plants in a field. Recognizing the potential for higher yields, he focused on developing improved soybean varieties. In the mid-1960s, while other seed companies focused on corn, Stine invested in soybean research, eventually licensing his genetics to major agribusiness corporations, including Monsanto and Syngenta.
Key Business Strategies
Stine's success is attributed to his innovative breeding techniques and licensing agreements. He founded Stine Seed Company, which became the world's largest private seed company and the largest independent seed company in the United States. His focus on high-yield corn and soybean breeding programs significantly enhanced agricultural productivity. Stine's strategy included a strong emphasis on protecting intellectual property and building a strong brand.

Harry Stine and his family are known for their commitment to philanthropy through the Stine Family Foundation. They have provided substantial support to various charitable causes, including education, healthcare, and community development. Stine has supported educational institutions, including his alma mater, and has been involved in healthcare initiatives and community development projects within Iowa.
