Early Life and Education
Hans Sy was born in the Philippines in 1955. He is the fourth child of Henry Sy Sr., the founder of the SM Group, a major conglomerate in the Philippines. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from De La Salle University in 1978.
Rise to Success
Hans Sy began his career within the SM Group, taking on roles of increasing responsibility within the family business. He played a key role in the expansion of SM Prime Holdings, the property development arm of SM Investments. From 1994 to 2016, he served as President of SM Prime Holdings. During his tenure, SM Prime grew significantly, with the number of malls in the Philippines reaching 88 and expanding into China with 8 malls. Sy also served as Chairman of China Banking Corporation and Chairman of National University.
