Early Life and Education
Hamilton Evans "Tony" James was born on February 3, 1951, in Wyandotte, Michigan. He is the son of Hamilton Renson James and Waleska James. James attended the Choate School (now Choate Rosemary Hall) and then Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude in 1973. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.
Rise to Success
James began his career in investment banking in 1975, joining Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ). He became head of DLJ's global mergers and acquisitions group in 1982 and founded DLJ Merchant Banking, Inc. in 1985. In 1995, he was appointed chairman of DLJ's banking group. In 2002, James joined Blackstone Inc. as president and COO. He played a key role in expanding Blackstone into a leading global alternative asset management firm. He oversaw the acquisition of GSO, the credit business, and the secondaries arm, Strategic Partners. Under James, Blackstone grew to an investment giant with $731 billion in assets.
Key Business Strategies
James's strategies focused on building and scaling businesses within the financial sector. At Blackstone, he was instrumental in the initial public offering and the expansion of the firm's private equity, real estate, and credit businesses. He established Blackstone's Tactical Opportunities section. He also created a private equity trade group, the American Investment Council, to lobby in Washington.
Philanthropy
James is actively involved in philanthropy. He served on the boards of several cultural and environmental organizations, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Wildlife Conservation Society. He has also been a Democratic donor and fundraiser.
