Early Life and Education
Harold Zieg Steinbrenner, known as Hal, was born on December 3, 1969, in Culver, Indiana. He is the younger son of George Steinbrenner, the former owner of the New York Yankees, and Joan Steinbrenner. Hal attended Culver Military Academy and graduated from Williams College in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He furthered his education by earning a Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida in 1994.
Rise to Success
Hal Steinbrenner's career took off as he assumed a more significant role in the New York Yankees organization. Starting in 2007, his father, George Steinbrenner, gradually ceded day-to-day control of the Yankees to Hal and his brother Hank due to his declining health. Hal was elected chairman of the board of Yankee Global Enterprises on September 28, 2007, and on November 20, 2008, Major League Baseball owners approved the shift of day-to-day control from George to Hal. Since taking over the organization, the Yankees have achieved notable success, including winning the 2009 World Series, making the playoffs eleven times, and opening a new stadium in 2009.
