Early Life
Guy Laliberté was born on September 2, 1959, in Quebec City, Canada. His early exposure to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus sparked his interest in the world of entertainment. He began producing performing arts events in high school. After dropping out of college, he pursued his passion, traveling around Europe and making money as a street performer by playing the accordion and learning skills such as fire-eating and stilt-walking.
Rise to Success
Laliberté co-founded Cirque du Soleil in 1984 with Gilles Ste-Croix. The company was initially funded by the Quebec government for the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada. Cirque du Soleil quickly became a global phenomenon, known for its unique blend of circus arts, storytelling, and theatrical elements, without the use of animals. Laliberté served as the CEO until 2015.
Key Business Strategies
Laliberté's success with Cirque du Soleil came from a unique vision. He invested in creativity and innovation, offering a different approach to traditional circuses. He sold his remaining stake in 2020.
