Early Life
Gustav Magnar Witzøe was born on February 8, 1993, in Frøya Municipality, Norway. He grew up on a small island off the northwest coast of Norway, in a close-knit fishing community. His childhood was modest and immersed in nature, fostering a sense of simplicity and close community ties. He attended local schools in Frøya and completed his high school education around 2011 at the age of 18.
Rise to Success
In 2013, at the age of 20, Witzøe received nearly half of SalMar ASA as a gift from his father, Gustav Witzøe. This transfer positioned him as the controlling shareholder, which was done to minimize inheritance tax liabilities. SalMar, founded in 1991, has become a global leader in sustainable aquaculture.
Key Business Strategies
While his father still runs the company, Gustav Magnar has taken on a more strategic investing role. He invests in real estate and tech startups, reflecting a diversified portfolio. He has invested in startups like Gobi, a Snapchat competitor, and Key Butler, which helps Airbnb hosts with key delivery and maintenance. Witzøe is also involved in venture capital.
Philanthropy
In 2021, Witzøe established the W Initiative, a humanitarian foundation supporting projects that enhance the quality of life for children and young people worldwide. The organization focuses on education, health, and equal opportunities.
