Early Life
Graeme Hart was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1955. He attended Mount Roskill Grammar School. Leaving school at 15, he worked as a tow-truck driver and panel beater. These early experiences instilled a strong work ethic. Hart started his first business at 18 with a loan from his father.
Rise to Success
Hart completed an MBA from the University of Otago in 1987. His thesis outlined his strategy to grow businesses by integrating acquired companies. He gained a significant opportunity when he purchased the Government Printing Office in 1990. Hart's most significant success came in the packaging industry. Through his private investment company, Rank Group, Hart acquired undervalued companies with steady cash flows, restructuring them to improve efficiency and profitability. In 2006, he purchased Carter Holt Harvey and Evergreen Packaging. He later acquired SIG and Alcoa's Packaging & Consumer Group, which he rebranded as Reynolds Packaging Group.
Key Business Strategies
Hart's investment strategy focuses on buying underperforming companies with strong market positions, reducing costs, and improving operations. Hart is known for avoiding publicity while executing large deals. His approach involves leveraged buyouts, strategic acquisitions, and efficient restructuring.
Philanthropy
Hart has engaged in philanthropy, often discreetly. He has donated to causes such as the University of Otago and relief efforts in Tonga. He has also donated to political campaigns.
