Early Life
Sir Gordon Wu Ying-sheung was born in Hong Kong in 1935. He attended Wah Yan College, a prestigious Jesuit secondary school, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors. He later studied engineering at the University of Manitoba before transferring to Princeton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in 1958.
Rise to Success
Wu's career took off in the business world, where he became the chairman of Hopewell Holdings Ltd., a major player in infrastructure and property development. From 1972 to 2002, he served as the managing director, leading the company through significant growth. Under his leadership, Hopewell undertook numerous infrastructure projects in mainland China and Southeast Asia, including the construction of China's first modern superhighway and the Shajiao B coal-fired power station.
Key Business Strategies
Wu's business strategies involved pioneering projects and strong relationships. He was an early advocate for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. He also used the build-operate-transfer (BOT) structure for projects in China. His focus on infrastructure and property development in Hong Kong and the mainland positioned him as a key figure in the region's economic development.
Philanthropy
Sir Gordon Wu is also known for his philanthropic endeavors. He donated US$5 million worth of company shares to Princeton University in 1984. He later pledged a further US$100 million to Princeton University and has served as a trustee, supporting educational and research initiatives. He also has served as Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
