Early Life and Education
Glen Albert Taylor was born on April 20, 1941, in Springfield, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm in Comfrey, Minnesota, instilling in him a strong work ethic. He graduated from Comfrey High School in 1959. Taylor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, physics, and social studies from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1962 and later obtained an executive MBA from Harvard Business School in 1978.
Rise to Success
Taylor's entrepreneurial journey began in 1975 when he acquired Carlson Wedding Service, a small Mankato print shop, for $2 million. He transformed this business into Taylor Corporation through strategic acquisitions and organic growth. The company has since become a multinational printing and electronics giant, with approximately 10,000 employees as of October 2025. Taylor stepped down as CEO in 2015 but remains the Chairman.
Key Business Strategies
Taylor Corporation's success is attributed to its strategy of acquiring and integrating other businesses in the graphic arts industry, with over 200 acquisitions since its inception. This has allowed the company to expand its services and market reach. Taylor's business acumen also led to his investment in the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) in 1994 and the Minnesota Lynx (WNBA) in 1999. He sold the majority stake in the Timberwolves and Lynx in 2021. In 2014, he purchased the Star Tribune, Minnesota's largest newspaper.
Philanthropy
Taylor is known for his philanthropic endeavors, supporting various causes and institutions. He donated $8 million to Minnesota State University to establish the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society. He has also contributed to educational institutions and community organizations.
