Early Life
Gerry Harvey was born on September 18, 1939, in rural New South Wales, Australia. He attended schools in Bathurst and Katoomba before moving to Sydney to attend university at 17, but he dropped out. He began his career selling vacuum cleaners and fridges door-to-door for Goodwins of Newtown. Harvey always wanted to be a farmer, but his entrepreneurial ventures led him to a different path.
Rise to Success
Harvey's career in retail began in 1961 when he opened his first store, Norman Ross, in Sydney with Ian Norman. The chain expanded to 42 stores by 1979, with annual sales of $240 million. In 1982, he sold Norman Ross, and later that year, co-founded Harvey Norman with Ian Norman. Under Harvey's leadership, Harvey Norman grew rapidly and expanded its domestic and international presence, becoming one of Australia's largest retailers. The first Harvey Norman store opened in Auburn, Sydney, in October 1982.
