Early Life and Education
Garrett Camp was born on October 4, 1978, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He showed a keen interest in technology from a young age. Camp graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 2001 and later earned a master's degree in software engineering.
Rise to Success
Camp co-founded StumbleUpon in 2002, a platform designed to help users discover personalized web content. The platform was later acquired by eBay in 2007 but was reacquired and rebranded as Mix in 2018. Camp's most significant career milestone came in 2009 when he co-founded Uber (initially UberCab) with Travis Kalanick, which transformed the transportation sector. In 2013, he founded Expa Labs to grow new companies.
Key Business Strategies
Camp's success stems from his ability to identify market gaps and leverage technology to create innovative solutions. Uber's strategy disrupted the traditional taxi business by offering a convenient ride-hailing service through a mobile app. Camp's venture into Expa Labs allowed him to provide starting capital, technical advice, and workspaces, fostering innovation and the launch of new companies.
Philanthropy
Camp is committed to philanthropy and has joined The Giving Pledge, promising to give away a significant portion of his wealth to charitable causes. He also established the Camp Foundation, which supports research in sustainability, environmental conservation, and infrastructure.
