Early Life
Fernando De Leon was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1978, and raised in Matamoros, Mexico. As the only English speaker in his family, he commuted daily across the border for school, attending classes in the US and Mexico. In his youth, De Leon represented South Texas in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Rise to Success
After graduating cum laude from Harvard University in 2001, he began his career at Goldman Sachs. In 2006, De Leon founded Leon Capital Group, a real estate development firm. He demonstrated exceptional market timing, selling nearly all his properties before the 2008 financial crisis. Post-crisis, he reinvested in real estate, accumulating millions of square feet of industrial space and thousands of apartment units. The company has since expanded into diverse industries, including healthcare and financial services, operating twelve independently managed subsidiaries.
Key Business Strategies
De Leon's approach emphasizes contrarian investment strategies, identifying inefficiencies, and creating value. His company's strategy involves long-term investments, often building businesses from the ground up or expanding existing ones. De Leon focuses on essential services and provides value to consumers through strategic investments in high-demand sectors.
Philanthropy
The De Leon Family Foundation focuses on poverty reduction, education, and healthcare access, primarily in South Texas and Northern Mexico. The foundation's De Leon Scholars Program provides scholarships to students across Texas who are committed to community improvement.
