Early Life
Emanuele (Lino) Saputo was born on April 2, 1937, in Montelepre, Sicily, Italy. His father, Giuseppe Saputo, was a cheesemaker. In 1950, Giuseppe and Lino's older brother, Frank, immigrated to Montreal, Canada, seeking better opportunities. Lino, along with his mother and siblings, joined them in 1952. Like many immigrants, the Saputos faced initial struggles, with every family member contributing. Two years after arriving, Lino encouraged his father to start their own business.
Rise to Success
In 1954, Giuseppe Saputo founded Saputo Inc. with just $500 and a bicycle for deliveries. Lino played a key role in the company's growth, becoming chairman of the board and president in 1969. Under his leadership, Saputo Inc. expanded significantly. In 1997, the company went public, with Lino Saputo becoming chairman and CEO. He transformed the small family business into one of the largest dairy processors globally. Lino Jr. took over as President and CEO in 2004, with Lino Sr. remaining as chairman until his retirement in August 2017.
