DeBartolo began his career in the family business, Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation, where he developed shopping malls. He later became the owner of the San Francisco 49ers in 1977, leading the team to unprecedented success. During his 23-year ownership, the 49ers won five Super Bowls: XVI (1982), XIX (1985), XXIII (1989), XXIV (1990), and XXIX (1995). This record of five Super Bowl victories is the most by a single owner in the NFL.
