Edward Perry "Ed" Bass was born on September 10, 1945, in Fort Worth, Texas. He is the second-oldest of four sons. Bass graduated from Yale University in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in administrative science. He also served in the United States Coast Guard.

Bass inherited a fortune from his uncle, Sid Richardson. He and his brothers built on this inheritance through investments in oil and pipelines. In early 2017, Bass and his brothers sold their oil company to ExxonMobil for $5.6 billion in stock. Bass is the chairman of Fine Line, an investment and venture-capital management firm.
