Dona and her brother, Ernesto, inherited the biotechnology company Serono, founded in 1906, which served as the foundation of the family's wealth. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University's College of Communication.

Dona Bertarelli was actively involved in Serono, the family business. From 1992 to 1997, she served as the Executive Director of Public and Professional Affairs, where she established the Serono Symposia and the Serono Foundation.
