Early Life
Dmitry Aleksandrovich Pumpyansky was born on March 22, 1964, in Kirov, Russia. He earned a degree in metallurgy from the Ural State Technical University in 1986. He later pursued advanced studies, earning a Candidate of Sciences (Engineering) and a Doctor of Science (Economics) degree.
Rise to Success
Pumpyansky began his career as a metals trader in the 1990s and then oversaw several metal plants in the Urals region. He took over the Sinarsky Pipe Factory and joined TMK ( тру́бная metallurgícheskaya kompániya), a Russian global manufacturer of steel pipes for the oil and gas industry, in 2002. Pumpyansky, along with fellow billionaires Sergei Popov and Andrei Melnichenko, bought the company. In 2006, he bought out his partners, becoming the 100% owner. He served as chairman of TMK until March 9, 2022.
Key Business Strategies
Under Pumpyansky's leadership, TMK expanded its operations internationally. In March 2021, TMK acquired an 86.5% stake in ChelPipe Group, a Russia-based steel producer. His ventures also included a joint venture with Siemens, which secured a $2.7 billion contract from Russian Railways to deliver modern trains.
Philanthropy
Pumpyansky is also involved in philanthropy, with his companies giving a facelift to a stadium that hosted the 2018 World Cup in Ekaterinburg. He owns a modern art gallery in Ekaterinburg.
