Dennis Gillings was born in London, England, in 1944. He earned a BSc in mathematics from the University of Exeter, followed by a PhD in mathematics from the same university. He also holds a master's degree equivalent in mathematical statistics from the University of Cambridge. Rise to Success
In 1971, Gillings accepted a position to teach biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1982, he founded Quintiles, a contract research organization (CRO). Under his leadership, Quintiles expanded rapidly, acquiring smaller companies and entering new markets. In 1994, Gillings took Quintiles public through an IPO. Quintiles became the largest global provider of clinical trials and commercial marketing services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.
