Early Life and Education
Daryl Allan Katz was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on May 31, 1961. His father, Barry Katz, was a pharmacist who owned Value Drug Mart, which inspired Daryl's interest in the pharmacy business. He attended the University of Alberta, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982 and a law degree in 1985.
Pharmacy and Business Ventures
Katz's career began in law, but he soon transitioned into the pharmaceutical industry. In 1991, he acquired the Canadian franchise rights to the Medicine Shoppe, marking his entry into the pharmacy business. He subsequently founded the Katz Group of Companies, which became the holding company for his various ventures. Katz expanded his pharmacy empire through strategic acquisitions, including the Rexall drugstore chain in 1996, Pharma Plus, and the Snyders Drug Store chain in the U.S. By 2008, Katz had built Canada's second-largest integrated pharmacy business, including over 1,800 stores.
Edmonton Oilers and Real Estate Development
In 2008, Katz purchased the Edmonton Oilers hockey team, fulfilling a lifelong dream. His ownership has included the development of Rogers Place arena and the surrounding ICE District in downtown Edmonton, a multi-billion dollar project that revitalizes the city's urban core. Katz also owns other sports franchises through OEG Inc.
Philanthropy
Katz is known for his significant philanthropic contributions to various causes, particularly in healthcare and education. He has donated millions to the University of Alberta, Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton.
