Early Life and Education
Chen Dongsheng was born in Tianmen, Hubei province, China, in 1957. He holds a PhD in Economics from Wuhan University. Chen's academic background laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the business world.
Rise to Success
In 1993, Chen founded China Guardian Auctions, China's first international auction house. Three years later, in 1996, he founded Taikang Life Insurance (now Taikang Insurance Group). Under his leadership, Taikang has grown into a leading insurance and financial services conglomerate in China, with a presence in insurance, asset management, and health and elderly care.
Key Business Strategies
Chen Dongsheng's strategy has been to build a value chain around life insurance, offering services throughout the customer's life cycle. This includes active elderly care, premier medical services, wealth management, and end-of-life care. Taikang's 'Four-in-One' business model integrates these services into a comprehensive health ecosystem.
Philanthropy
Chen Dongsheng is also recognized for his philanthropic efforts. In 2021, he donated RMB 22 million (approximately $3.1 million USD) to the China Charity Federation for the development of the Tianmenshan Wanlin Primary School. Taikang and Chen have donated a total of RMB 490 million (approximately $68.6 million USD) to the public.
