Charles Payson "Chase" Coleman III was born on June 1, 1975, in Glen Head, Long Island. He comes from a family with a strong background in law and design. His father, C. Payson Coleman Jr., is a partner at a New York law firm, and his mother, Kim Coleman, owns an interior design firm. Coleman attended Deerfield Academy and graduated from Williams College in 1997 with a degree in Spanish and Economics. During his college years, he co-captained the lacrosse team.

Coleman began his career in 1997 working for Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. In 2000, Robertson closed his fund, entrusting Coleman with over $25 million to manage, making him one of the "Tiger Cubs".
