Early Life
Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi was born in Bangkok in 1944 to a Thai-Chinese family. His father was a street vendor, and Charoen started working at a young age. He is the sixth of eleven children and his family spoke Teochew. Charoen's early experiences shaped his practical approach to business.
Rise to Success
Charoen began his career by supplying distilleries that produced Thai whiskey, which were then a state-run monopoly. Through his contacts, he acquired a license to produce his own alcoholic drinks. In 1985, he secured 100% of the concessions. In 1993, Charoen launched Chang beer, which quickly gained a 60% market share in Thailand. He has also become the largest landlord in Thailand, with TCC Group also having commercial and retail properties in Singapore. He owns 50 hotels globally, including the Plaza Athénée in Manhattan, New York City.
Key Business Strategies
His key strategies have involved acquiring licenses, building strong distribution networks, and launching successful brands like Chang beer. Charoen has also expanded into property development. His aggressive corporate tactics have occasionally sparked disputes, though such maneuvers have underpinned his growth into regional markets.
