Early Life
Charles Clarence Butt was born on February 3, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the grandson of Florence Butt, who founded the H-E-B supermarket chain in 1905. Growing up in a close-knit family, Butt developed a strong work ethic early on by assisting in the family business. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Rise to Success
Butt joined H-E-B in 1963 and quickly advanced through the ranks, becoming chairman, CEO, and president in 1971. Under his leadership, H-E-B has grown into a retail giant with over 400 stores and $38.9 billion in sales. He handed the CEO role to his nephew, Howard Butt III, in 2021, but remains the chairman. H-E-B is the largest privately-held employer in Texas.
