Early Life
Carlos Slim Helú was born in Mexico City on January 28, 1940. His parents, Julián Slim Haddad and Linda Helú, were of Lebanese descent. His father immigrated to Mexico from Lebanon at the age of 14. Slim's father taught him basic business practices from a young age. He studied civil engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Rise to Success
Slim began his business career in the 1960s, establishing the foundation for Grupo Carso. He attained billionaire status after the 1982 Mexican economic crisis, acquiring undervalued companies. In 1990, Slim, along with foreign partners, purchased Telmex, the state-owned telephone company. Through strategic management, Slim transformed Telmex into a highly profitable enterprise. America Movil was created when Telmex spun off its wireless mobile activities in 2000. By 2007, América Móvil became the largest cellular phone service in Latin America.
