Carlos Eduardo Sanchez was born in 1962 in Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil. His parents were Emiliano Sanchez and Ana Defillo Sanchez. His father founded Farmácia Santa Catarina, a small pharmacy, in 1950 in Santo André. In 1964, the business evolved into a small pharmaceutical laboratory called EMS, where the industrial-scale production of medications began.
Rise to Success
After his father’s death in 1988, Carlos, at age 26, took over the pharmaceutical industry, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. With the support of his sister Nanci Sanchez, he took drastic measures, including selling the family's properties, to save the company. The next major move came in the early 2000s when EMS was at the forefront of producing generic drugs. EMS became the first pharmaceutical company in Brazil to manufacture generic medications.
