Burhan Karim was born into a family with deep entrepreneurial roots. His father, Anwar Karim, founded the Nam Cheong Soap Factory in Medan, North Sumatra, in 1932. This factory laid the foundation for the family's future ventures in the palm oil industry.

In 1970, the Karim family expanded their business interests by commissioning the first palm oil refinery in Indonesia. Two years later, in 1972, they officially established PT Musim Mas. Burhan Karim, along with his brothers Bachtiar and Bahari, has been instrumental in the company's growth. Musim Mas has grown into a global player in the palm oil industry with operations in 13 countries across Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, and South America.

Bachtiar Karim has also donated $2 million to the National University of Singapore to establish a professorship on sustainability.
