Early Life
Brian Joseph Chesky was born on August 29, 1981, in Niskayuna, New York. His parents, Deborah and Robert Chesky, were social workers. He has a younger sister, Allison. From a young age, Chesky displayed an interest in art and design, drawing replicas of paintings and redesigning toys. He was also a competitive bodybuilder and a captain of the hockey team while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Rise to Success
Chesky graduated from RISD in 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in industrial design. Post-graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to work as an industrial designer. However, he soon moved to San Francisco and, along with Joe Gebbia, co-founded Airbnb in 2008. The idea for Airbnb emerged when Chesky and Gebbia, struggling to pay rent, decided to rent out air mattresses in their apartment during a design conference. They were later joined by Nathan Blecharczyk, who became the third co-founder.
