Early Life
Boris Rotenberg was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, on January 3, 1957. He comes from a Jewish family. From 1968 to 1978, he was heavily involved in judo, training alongside Vladimir Putin and winning awards.
Rise to Success
After becoming a professional judo trainer in Helsinki in 1992, Rotenberg returned to St. Petersburg in 1998. In 2001, he co-founded SMP Bank with his brother Arkady. The bank grew to have over 100 branches across 40 Russian cities. Through his friendship with Vladimir Putin, Rotenberg's company aligned closely with Gazprom. He has also been involved in the construction industry, co-owning SGM (StroyGazMontazh), the largest construction company for gas pipelines in Russia.
Key Business Strategies
Key business strategies included securing major contracts from Gazprom through SGM. SMP Bank's alignment with Gazprom, facilitated by his relationship with Putin, has been crucial for his success. Rotenberg's involvement in construction projects, including those for the Sochi Winter Olympics, further expanded his business interests. However, the U.S. government sanctioned him in 2014, and the UK sanctioned him in 2022. Despite these sanctions, Rotenberg has continued to be involved in sports, including owning the Sochi football club.
