Early Life
Beda Diethelm was born in the small Swiss village of Galgenen in 1941. His early interest in electronics led him to train as an apprentice for a radio and TV technician in Zurich. This early experience laid the groundwork for his future career in the hearing aid industry.
Rise to Success
Diethelm's career took a significant turn when he joined what would become Sonova (originally AG für Elektroakustik) in 1965. By 1962, he was already the head of production and technical director of Bommer, a Zurich-based supplier of hearing aids. Diethelm's commitment and insight were recognized when he received a stake in the company in 1980, after the death of Ernst Rihs. With the company's name change in 2007 to Sonova Holding AG, Diethelm, along with the Rihs brothers, played a crucial role in growing the business to its current stature.
Key Business Strategies
Diethelm's long-term perspective and focus on Sonova's growth have been central to his wealth accumulation. The company’s expansion and innovation in the hearing aid and cochlear implant sectors, including the development of waterproof implants, have been key to its market success. His consistent shareholding demonstrates a belief in the long-term value of Sonova, capitalizing on the increasing global demand for hearing aids.
Philanthropy
While specific details on Diethelm’s philanthropic activities are not widely publicized, his contribution to the hearing aid industry indirectly benefits millions through improved hearing solutions. The development and accessibility of advanced hearing aids are significant contributions to public health and well-being.
