Early Life and Education
Arturo Moreno was born on August 14, 1946, in Tucson, Arizona, to Mexican-American parents. He was the oldest of 11 children. His father operated a print shop, while his grandfather founded Tucson's first Spanish-language newspaper. Growing up, Moreno learned the value of hard work and ambition. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, returning home in 1968. He then attended the University of Arizona, graduating in 1973 with a degree in marketing.
Rise to Success
Moreno's career began in advertising. He worked for Eller Outdoor before moving to Outdoor Systems in 1984. Moreno and his friend, Wally Kelly, tried to buy Outdoor Systems in 1984, but were unsuccessful at the time. He later became CEO, taking the company public in 1996. In 1998, Infinity Broadcasting acquired Outdoor Systems for $8 billion.
Key Business Strategies
Moreno's success stems from a combination of strategic acquisitions and a keen understanding of market dynamics. His early career in advertising laid the groundwork for his later ventures. The acquisition of the Los Angeles Angels in 2003 for $183 million was a pivotal moment. Moreno focused on improving the team's marketing, fan experience, and community engagement.
Philanthropy
In 1997, Arturo and his wife, Carole, established the Moreno Family Foundation. The foundation supports various causes, including scholarships for first-generation college students, veterans' initiatives, and donations to healthcare facilities and local charities.
