Arne Alexander Wilhelmsen was born in Oslo, Norway, on June 15, 1929. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, which equipped him with the business acumen that would later serve him well in the maritime industry. His career began in the shipping sector.
Rise to Success
Wilhelmsen joined his family's shipping concern, Anders Wilhelmsen & Co. AS, in 1954, and became its president in 1961. In 1968, he co-founded Royal Caribbean Cruise Line with Edwin Stephan and others. Over the next three decades, he served on the company's board of directors. His vision helped transform the cruise industry from a niche market into one of the fastest-growing vacation segments, with the company introducing innovative amenities and expanding its fleet to 68 ships. In 2003, his son, Alex, succeeded him on the board.
