Early Life
Arkady Romanovich Rotenberg was born on December 15, 1951, in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia). His father worked in management at a telephone factory. In 1963, Rotenberg and Vladimir Putin, with whom he shared a close friendship since childhood, joined Anatoly Rakhlin's sambo club. Rotenberg graduated from the Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health in 1978 and became a judo trainer.
Rise to Success
Rotenberg's career took a significant turn after Putin came into power. He co-founded SMP Bank and became a billionaire through state-sponsored construction projects and oil pipelines. A key moment was the formation of Stroygazmontazh (SGM) with five companies purchased from Gazprom in 2008. SGM quickly became a major supplier for Gazprom, earning billions in revenue. Rotenberg also secured significant contracts for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Rotenberg's business acumen is evident in his strategic acquisitions and partnerships. The purchase of Northern Europe Pipe Project significantly increased profits. His companies have been involved in major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Crimean Bridge. Despite facing sanctions, Rotenberg has maintained a significant financial influence in Russia, leveraging his close ties with Putin to secure lucrative contracts.
Philanthropy
Arkady Rotenberg has been involved in philanthropy, notably as the president of the Hockey Club Dynamo Moscow. He also serves as the chairman of the executive board of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.
