Aloke Lohia was born on November 27, 1958, in Kolkata, India. He is the younger brother of Sri Prakash Lohia. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi in 1978. He later received honorary doctorates in business administration and science from universities in Thailand. In 1979, at the age of 21, Lohia relocated from India to Indonesia to join the family-owned P.T. Indo Rama Synthetics as Finance Director, a position he held until 1987.

In 1988, Aloke Lohia moved to Thailand and founded Indorama Chemicals (now Aurus Specialty Company Limited). In 1994, he started Thailand's first wool business under the name Indorama Holdings.
