Early Life
Alexei Viktorovich Kuzmichev was born on October 15, 1962, in Kirov, Russia. His early life included military service on the Soviet-Chinese border as a radio operator from 1980 to 1982. He joined the Communist Party during this time, indicating an early interest in politics. In 1983, he enrolled in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, where he met future business partners Mikhail Fridman and German Khan.
Rise to Success
Kuzmichev, along with Fridman and Khan, founded Alfa Photo in 1988, which imported photo chemicals. He persuaded his partners to diversify into the export business, leading to the creation of Alfa Eco in 1998, which later became the foundation of the Alfa Group Consortium. The Alfa Group expanded to include Alfa-Bank, VimpelCom, and stakes in various other companies. Kuzmichev played a key role in the privatization of the TNK oil company and later formed the TNK-BP venture. In 2013, he sold his stake in TNK-BP for $2.5 billion.
