Alexandre Grendene Bartelle was born on January 2, 1950, in Farroupilha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In 1971, Alexandre co-founded Grendene with his twin brother, Pedro Grendene Bartelle. Initially, the company manufactured plastic packaging for wine bottles. However, Bartelle and his brother recognized the potential of plastic in footwear and pivoted to producing soles and heels for shoes. This move proved to be a turning point, leading to the creation of the iconic 'Melissa' line of jelly shoes in 1979, which became a global success. Grendene rapidly expanded, becoming a major player in the footwear industry, with a presence in over 100 countries.
