Early Life
Alexander Anatolyevich Ponomarenko was born on October 27, 1964, in Belogorsk, Crimea, then part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He attended Simferopol State University, where he earned a degree in Physical Education in 1988. He also served in the army from 1983-1985. As a youth, he was a competitive boxer, winning the junior boxing championship of Ukraine.

Ponomarenko began his business career in the late 1980s. He started with a perfume factory and building materials enterprise in Crimea with Aleksandr Skorobogatko. They later moved to Moscow and founded the Russian General Bank in 1996. In 2011, he acquired what is known as Putin's Palace, though he later withdrew from the project.
