Alec E. Gores was born in 1953 in Nazareth, Israel, to a family with a Greek father and a Lebanese mother. At the age of 15, Gores' family moved to Flint, Michigan, where he started working at his uncle's store. He graduated from Genesee High School and earned a degree in computer science from Western Michigan University.

Gores began his career at General Motors but quickly ventured into entrepreneurship. In 1978, he founded Executive Business Systems with a modest $8,000 investment, which he later sold for $2 million. This initial success provided the foundation for his future endeavors.
