Early Life
Alan B. Miller was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937. His father owned a dry cleaning store, and his mother worked for a millinery company. As a youth, Miller enjoyed sports and worked to supplement the family income. Miller excelled in basketball in high school, winning a New York City championship in 1954. He received a full scholarship to the University of Utah but later graduated from the College of William & Mary, and earned an MBA from The Wharton School.
Rise to Success
Miller's career began in advertising at Young & Rubicam. He then transitioned to healthcare and founded American Medicorp in 1969, which built privately owned hospitals. After a hostile takeover of American Medicorp, Miller founded Universal Health Services (UHS) in 1979. Under his leadership, UHS grew into a Fortune 300 healthcare corporation.
Key Business Strategies
Miller's strategy included strategic acquisitions, establishing new hospitals in growth markets, and replacing facilities previously owned by less successful operators. UHS focused on delivering superior patient care, putting patients first in all decisions. UHS currently owns and operates 400 facilities across the US and the UK.
Philanthropy
Alan Miller is also involved in philanthropy. The Patriot Support Program provides behavioral healthcare for active-duty military, veterans, and their families.
