Early Life
Alan B. Miller was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on August 17, 1937. His father owned a dry cleaner and his mother worked for a millinery company. Miller excelled in sports and was the New York City basketball champion in 1954.
Rise to Success
After serving in the U.S. Army, Miller pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the College of William & Mary and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. His career began in advertising before transitioning to healthcare. In 1969, he founded American Medicorp, a hospital management company, and became CEO in 1973. He successfully turned the company around before it was taken over in 1978. Undeterred, Miller founded Universal Health Services (UHS) in 1979. Under his leadership, UHS grew from a startup into a Fortune 500 company, becoming one of the largest healthcare providers in the U.S. and the U.K.. Miller stepped down as CEO in 2021, remaining as Executive Chairman.
