Early Life and Education
Yu Renrong was born in Ningbo, China, in 1966. He excelled academically from a young age and pursued his engineering education at Tsinghua University, graduating from the Department of Electronic Engineering in 1990.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Yu began his career as an engineer at Inspur Group (formerly Langchao), a major Chinese tech conglomerate. In 1998, Yu founded Beijing Huaqing Xingchang Science and Trade Co., Ltd., recognizing the potential in the distribution of electronic components. He successfully capitalized on the growth of the domestic mobile phone market.
In 2007, at the age of 41, Yu founded Will Semiconductor (later OmniVision Integrated Circuits Group) in Shanghai, investing 4 million yuan. Will Semiconductor focused on semiconductor design, and under Yu's leadership, the company grew to become a major player in the industry. A key strategic move was the 2019 acquisition of OmniVision Technologies, a U.S.-based leader in CMOS image sensors, for $2.2 billion, which significantly boosted Will Semiconductor's technological capabilities. Will Semiconductor went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in May 2017 and held a global depository receipt (GDR) offering on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2023.

Yu Renrong's key strategies include a focus on the design and distribution of semiconductor products, especially image sensor chips. He expanded through strategic acquisitions, most notably the acquisition of OmniVision. Yu also expanded Will Semiconductor's global reach.
Philanthropy
Yu Renrong is known for his significant philanthropic contributions, particularly in education. In December 2020, he pledged over 20 billion yuan (approximately $3 billion) to establish the Oriental University of Technology in his hometown of Ningbo. By November 2021, this commitment increased to 30 billion yuan (approximately $4.5 billion). Yu topped the Hurun China Philanthropy List in 2024, donating approximately 5.3 billion yuan ($745 million) to the Oriental University of Technology.
