Early Life
Sjamsul Nursalim was born in Lampung on January 19, 1942. He came from a family with a trading background, which influenced his interest in business from a young age. His father was a rubber seller. Nursalim pursued his education in the United States, earning a degree in business administration.
Rise to Success
Returning to Indonesia, Nursalim took over Gajah Tunggal, a small tire manufacturing company founded in 1951. Under his leadership, the company transformed significantly. He focused on modernizing the manufacturing process, improving product quality, and expanding the company's market reach. One of Nursalim's key strategies was to diversify Gajah Tunggal's product line, expanding into tires for motorcycles, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles. The success of Gajah Tunggal made him well-known internationally.
Key Business Strategies
Nursalim expanded his business portfolio to various sectors. He owns shares in Mr. Sing Holdings, a property company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange. He also has great involvement in PT Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk (MAPI), a major retail company that houses various international brands such as Zara, Converse, and Starbucks in Indonesia. Through PT Satya Mulia Gema Gemilang, Sjamsul is suspected of controlling around 51 percent of MAPI's shares.
