Early Life
Michael ByungJu Kim was born in Jinhae, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, in 1963. He immigrated to the United States at a young age and later became a U.S. citizen. Kim graduated from Haverford College in 1985 with a degree in English and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1990. During his time at Harvard, he was a Fulbright Scholar.
Rise to Success
Kim began his career in investment banking, holding positions at Goldman Sachs and Salomon Smith Barney. In 1999, he joined the Carlyle Group as President of Carlyle Asia. In 2005, he founded MBK Partners, a private equity firm based in Seoul, South Korea. Under his leadership, MBK Partners has grown to become one of the largest private equity firms in Asia, with over $30 billion in assets under management. He has been instrumental in several major acquisitions in Asia, including the acquisition of ING Life Korea and the $6.1 billion takeover of Tesco's Korean operation, Homeplus.

Kim's success stems from his focus on the North Asia market and his ability to identify and execute strategic investments. He has demonstrated expertise in leveraged buyouts and value creation through operational improvements and governance reforms. Philanthropy
Michael Kim is actively involved in philanthropy, with a focus on education and the arts. In April 2024, he donated $25 million to Haverford College to establish the Institute for Ethical Inquiry and Leadership. He also donated $10 million to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He has also been recognized as a Forbes Asia Hero of Philanthropy in 2021, 2022, and 2024.
