Early Life and Education
Michael S. Chae was born in 1967. He graduated with a B.A., magna cum laude from Harvard College, received an M. Phil. in Philosophy and International Relations from Cambridge University and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
Rise to Success
Chae's career began prior to law school at investment firms Dillon, Read & Co. and the Carlyle Group, L.P.. He joined Blackstone in 1997. Since joining Blackstone in 1997, Mr. Chae has served in a broad range of leadership roles including Head of International Private Equity, Head of Private Equity for Asia Pacific. He played a central role in some of Blackstone's largest and most significant private equity investments. When he was named CFO in 2015,. In January 2025, he was named Vice Chairman.
Key Business Strategies
As CFO and Vice Chairman, Chae has management responsibility over the firm's global finance, treasury, technology and corporate development functions. He has been instrumental in expanding Blackstone's footprint in Asia and Europe. Chae’s role includes overseeing several investment committees. He is also involved in the firm’s enterprise risk and valuation committees and sits on many of the firm's investment committees.
Philanthropy
Chae is active in non-profit work, focusing on education and policy. He founded the Michael S. and Alexa B. Chae Initiative in Private Sector Leadership at Yale Law School, supporting students interested in private-sector careers. He also serves on the boards of the Robin Hood Foundation, the St. Bernard's School, the Asia Society, and the Harvard Management Company.
