Early Life and Education
Jaroslav Haščák was born on August 30, 1969, in Ďurková, Czechoslovakia. After high school, he pursued studies in international relations, attending the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) and Peking University in China, graduating from MGIMO in 1993.
Rise to Success
In the early 1990s, Haščák, along with Marek Dospiva, started importing Chinese textiles, laying the groundwork for their future investment endeavors. Together with other partners, they founded Penta Brokers, which later evolved into Penta Investments Group in 1994. Through strategic acquisitions and restructuring, Penta grew significantly, notably gaining control of VÚB Kupón, a major investment fund. The company expanded its portfolio into healthcare, finance, retail, manufacturing, and real estate across Europe.
Key Business Strategies
Penta's strategy focused on acquiring, restructuring, and selling businesses to increase market value. Haščák led the company's expansion, particularly in healthcare and finance, including the acquisition of pharmacy chains, hospitals, and financial institutions. He initiated a shift from private equity to long-term equity investments, including venture capital in innovative technology companies. His hands-on management style fostered a competitive culture within the company.
Philanthropy
In 2013, Haščák made a significant donation to the scholarship fund of his alma mater, MGIMO.
Controversies
Haščák has faced scrutiny, especially concerning the 'Gorilla' scandal, which involved leaked wiretap transcripts alleging meetings with government officials to discuss privatization deals. He was also linked to businessman Marian Kočner, who was charged with the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak. Charges related to the Gorilla affair have been dropped in January 2024.
