Early Life and Education
Hemendra Kothari was born in Mumbai, India, on August 25, 1946. He graduated from Sydenham College in Mumbai. Following his father's advice, Kothari initially worked in the textile sector at Morarji Mills, gaining experience before entering the financial industry.
Rise to Success
Kothari's career in finance began in 1969 when he joined the family business, D.S. Purbhoodas & Co.. In 1975, he founded DSP Financial Consultants, which evolved into a major financial services organization. A pivotal moment was the partnership with Merrill Lynch in 1995, which led to the formation of DSP Merrill Lynch Limited. Kothari served as Chairman of DSP Merrill Lynch until 2009, selling his stake in tranches between 2005 and 2009. In 2008, he co-founded DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund with BlackRock but later bought out BlackRock's ownership. He currently chairs DSP Investment Managers.
