He furthered his education and graduated from the Irkutsk Polytechnical Institute in 1978 with a degree in "Electrification and automation of mining operations."

Kozovoy's career began in 1970, working as an underground electrician at Mine No. 3 of the Cheremkhovougol trust. He steadily advanced, holding positions such as electrician at the Raspadskaya mine, deputy chief of preparatory work, chief of the tunneling block, and deputy chief engineer. In 1991, he became the acting chairman of the supervisory board of Raspadskaya Ltd. In 1993, he became the CEO of Raspadskaya Ltd, a key moment in his career.
